In this interview, Stefan Tilkov talks to Sanjiva Weerawarana on Web services, REST, standards, open source SOA tooling and scripting languages in Web services. He also expresses the strategy of WSO2 in providing open source middleware.

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has taken modular programming principals into the distributed computing environment. But the functionality provided by such modules are much broader and, hence, can be considered as services. When applications are deployed in a distributed computing environment there is a need for a set of infrastructure services such a life-cycle management, service announcement, service discovery, security, integration, etc. Applications that provide these infrastructure services make up the SOA platform.

What does the future hold for the open source enterprise service bus (ESB)? Will there be a place for closed source ESBs or some hybrid approach? In the first part of this interview with Rich Seeley, Paul Fremantle, co-founder and vice president of WSO2 Inc., he discusses these issues as well as the Apache Synapse open source ESB, which is the core of the WSO2 ESB product.
