Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has taken modular programming principals into the distributed computing environment. But the functionality provided by such modules are much broader and, hence, can be considered as services. When applications are deployed in a distributed computing environment there is a need for a set of infrastructure services such a life-cycle management, service announcement, service discovery, security, integration, etc. Applications that provide these infrastructure services make up the SOA platform. In this session of SOA Wold Conference and Expo held on12th - 13th of November 2007, Sanjaya discusses the most common approach to implementing applications in SOA - Web services. Considering the advantages of the use of FOSS solutions in application development, it’s worth evaluating Web services–based FOSS options in building a SOA platform.
