You might want to look at the NIO HTTP ApacheBench toolkit from here:

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/httpcomponents/httpcore/trunk/contrib/src/main/java/org/apache/http/contrib/benchmark/

Asankha and the ESB team know all about it too. Its a command line tool, 
but it gives much more repeatable results than JMeter.
